1974 AD is a Nepali rock band, formed in Kathmandu, Nepal in the early 90s. They experiment with various genre of music including Nepali folk, ragas, rock, funk, blues and jazz as well. 1974 AD are amongst the most successful recording artists in Nepal. Most of their albums are ranked among the top-ten best-selling albums according to the Hits FM of Nepal. Their concert name being 'Rock Yatra,' in 2000 AD was watched by more than 60,000 people, the largest attendance for a concert in Nepal.
The band was formed during 90s by a group of teachers from Gyanodaya School, Lalitpur which included guitarist Phiroj Shyangden, bassist Nirakar Yakthumba, drummer Bhanu A. they were influenced by the English artist like Bryan Adams, Deep Purple, Beatles Band and many others. They were also interested in playing various genres like hardrock, heavy metal, rock and blues through several gigs around Kathmandu where they covered numbers from Bryan Adams, Deep Purple and other rock group.
During those years Adrian Pradhan and Sanjay Shrestha were involved in their own bands. Adrian Pradhan used to be in a hard rock band form Kalimpong named “The Flame”. Percussionist Sanjay Shrestha used to play the drums from the St Xavier’s School band was involved with nepali fusion rock act “Shristi”. Later during the late 90s’ Adrian Pradhan joined 1974 AD as their drummer / vocalist after former drummer Bhanu A decided to leave the band. The following year local guitar enthusiast Manoj K.C from Dhobighat, Lalitpur also joined the band and completed the lineup.
Songs and albums produced by 1974 AD are usually in the Nepali language. Lyrics include themes of patriotism, Nepali virtues, unity, love and nationalism. There is a lot of variety in the music of 1974 AD. They have successfully tried various genres of music. Their songs, like "Nepali," "Sambodhan," "Pahilo Junima," "Parelima," "Samjhi Baschu" and "Chudaina Timro Mayale" amongst various others, were some of the biggest hits in Nepalese music. The song "Nepali" from their highest selling album Satabdi has been received as the most patriotic songs till now.
Experimenting with the rock and modern tunes, the band has produced classic hits like Je gara jaso gara jata sukai laijau malai and sambodhan timilai . The video of the first song features Nepal Army and the second one is about late King Birendra.
1974 AD is very active in charity performance since its beginning days, it has performed more than 40 charity concert in Nepal till date.1974 AD has contribute a lot in Nepalese music industry and still carying on.
